Leita Thompson Park Demonstration
Design - Stormwater Attenuation and Groundwater Augmentation Project

Ecological Solutions serves as the lead consultant on a team that was selected for a demonstration project by the City of Roswell. The project includes the design and construction of stormwater infrastructure improvements, monitoring and assessment and technology testing. The focus of the Leita Thompson Park Demonstration Project is to provide stormwater controls to improve water quality, provide groundwater augmentation to increase base flow in the adjacent stream and to begin a protection network around the City of Roswell’s drinking water supply. The overall park design will incorporate recreational trails and park amenities into the stormwater control and groundwater augmentation features.

The Project is a component of an overall groundwater augmentation program, the Big Creek Demonstration Program, where selected areas within the City are being improved in terms of wetland functions, groundwater infiltration capacity, stormwater quantity and quality control, and recreational trail opportunities. The Park occupies approximately

107 acres within the headwaters of the Rocky Creek watershed upstream of Old Mountain Park Road. The watershed drains approximately 600 acres at Old Mountain Park Road with land use consisting generally of residential sub-division development and heavily wooded areas. The heavily wooded areas are predominately within the Leita Thompson Park footprint and are dominated by a mature beech-hickory-oak overstory stratum. Though located on the fringe of the watershed, an important consideration is the impact of transportation corridors and shopping center development. Based on field inspection, the transportation and shopping center development has already impacted the upper stream reaches by introducing higher velocity stormwater runoff into Rocky Creek and tributaries.

The Project will seek to improve stormwater quantity and quality passing under Old Mountain Park Road through implementing engineered solutions to improve the existing condition of the site and to anticipate the future condition following build-out of recreational amenities. Our primary goal will be to maximize site design in consideration of the various federal and state permits that regulate activities in or around our streams, ponds, wetlands, and other jurisdictional areas.
